What The Hell Is This? Cutthroat Island
What The Hell Is This? look at the Renny Harlin mega-bomb Cutthroat Island. This film bombed so hard it destroyed its own studio, which even Heaven's Gate never even truly managed. Not as bad as its reputation, it is still a film with many flaws but is worth a look to see how a film can go so wrong.

The Guest and Lumberjack The Monster
Просмотров 21112 часов назад
A look at two fun and twisted genre films, The Guest and Lumberjack The Monster. The Guest is an Adam Winguard film that goes from twisted thriller/horror first half to action second half while Lumberjack The Monster is a Takashi Miike film which pits psychopath verses serial killer. Both films are enormous fun.
Witchfinder General

A look at the very influential Michael Reeves film Witchfinder General. This film looks at the British civil war witchhunts led by Mathew Hopkins and their damage done during the period. This is a brutal revenge-tragedy where no-one escapes with their sanity.

Just your normal, everyday Eastern European film about communist dictatorship. Nothing to see here. And its feminist in a spiky way.
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers Films

A look at the three Invasion Of The Body Snatchers films, from the 1950's, 1970's and 1990's. I ignore The Invasion as its terrible. But the other films have great directors in Don Siegal, Phillip Kaufman and Abel Ferrera, doing their thing with an interesting idea.

Brits Do America: Civil War and Love Lies Bleeding

A look at two genre films made by British directors covering America. Alex Garland directed Civil War while Rose Glass made Love Lies Bleeding. Both are terrific, eccentric films that are not for everyone but are worth a look.
Furiosa

A look at the new George Miller film in the Mad Max series, Furiosa. This is a prequel to Fury Road and tells the story of how Furiosa ended up where she was. Its a wonderful film that expands the world and characters without giving up narrative pacing or urgency. A must-see.

Masters Of The Air

This is the follow-up to Band Of Brothers and The Pacific, as a look at American bomber crews during world war 2. Despite a good cast and an interesting subject matter, it cannot find control of its narrative. It emerges as a mess that needed more work before filming began.
To The Wonder

A look at the very under-rated Terrence Malick film To The Wonder. This film was critically and commercially mauled on release and is still seen as a lesser Malick film. It is not. Its one of his strongest films.

Three Ken Burns Docs

As well as his long series on subjects like The Civil War, Ken Burns also makes studies of important lives in American history. This video covers three of them: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain. The films cover the lives of these men and their successes and failures, seeing them as flawed men who did great things rather than icons.
Ghostwatch and Late Night With The Devil

Ghostwatch and Late Night With The Devil share a basic premise but with a different approach and results. Ghostwatch focuses upon using modern (at the time) medium to suggest spooky goings on during a live broadcast. Late Night With The Devil suggests a historical document with a supernatural subject. One is low-key effective while the other is broader, which loses the horror. Both have merits ...

I saw it in a theatre without knowing much about it figuring it was a low budget genre piece. It started off that way but by the end I was genuinely moved and the audience gave it an enthusiastic round of applause!
Thanks for watching. There's a lot more to it than meets the eye. Its a film that deserves its cult audience but has more within it if looked at closely.
Not my bag but I think it’s a good film. I liked it and shall watch it again for sure. I get the importance and the energy for sure but just like the party and the guests, marketa lazarova , elektra my love and walerie and her week of wonders , I don’t love them. Give me the miraculous virgin and the Cassandra cat. I’m a heathen.
Yes, you're strange. I adore this, party and the guests and valerie. Its just one of those things. Some films get to you and some don't.
Much like The Wicker Man, I've never been a huge fan of Witchfinder General and feel guilty about it. Both are still excellent and well worth having and watching but I don't think they are as amazing as other people do. Yes, I am weird.
I have a similar view of the wicker man to you but this one is great. I still think its under-rated, despite some flaws due to budget.
Hi Peter. I just watched Ferrari (which I thought was excellent) and then saw on Letterboxd that you were one of the few who had given it 5 stars, so was glad to then find your video. Great comments as far too many have dismissed the film as slow and dull, which it definitely isn’t.
Thanks for watching the video. Ferrari is a beautiful film. Easily my favourite of the year. I think its one that will be remembered more fondly, as most great films are. It wasn't what people expected.
Ray Winstone said he preferred the original version of Scum as well.
I think Alan Clarke preferred it too. The remake is good but the original is genuinely great.
Good stuff. i need to pick up the Ferrara film on Kino. Always loved the 56 version for its economy and pace. Have grown to love the 78 version. It has a Richard Lester type cast. Haven't seen the Invasion. For obvious reasons.
It was all going so well until the last one. But the first three are so good and different that you can watch all three over a week and not be bored.
Where csn i watch this with englush sub titles ?
The film was available on bluray. That's how I saw it.
Great review of this movie
Thanks. Its a great film to talk about.
Jonah Hex is one of DC Comics premiere old west heroes, inspired by Clint Eastwoods spaghetti western series. A former Confederate officer whose face was heavily scarred by a tomahawk blow, he roamed the American west as a bounty hunter and anti-hero facing all sorts of threats from corrupt Rail Road barons to mystical Native American spirit-demons, for a time he was also transported into a dystopian Mad Max style future. DC had been trying to make a live-action movie with him for years but kept running into various roadblocks. Sadly when they did finally get the film going the movie producers decided to go into a ridiculous steam-punk route with silly gadgets up to and including gatling guns tied to a horse. Josh Brolin was good casting as Jonah but that was just about the only good thing in the movie.
Yep. Its a total mess.
I may catch it at some point but it doesn't sound like it's something to be in a hurry to catch up with. American centric? surely not. U-571 all over again?
U571 is a lot more fun than this. It's a mess. Ultimately it's too frustrating to recommend
I believe I have seen this once but it's a film that I remember nothing about it. Along with Abraham Lincoln:vampire hunter.
I would rather watch the vampire hunter film (which may be on a future video in this series, in a few months)
A bunch of films that I'll check out at alater date, apart from the last 2 probably. Fun stuff.
Definitely avoid the last two. They are pretty pain but I feel I need to see the final part because I have gotten this far.
Action Man Robot Atak would have fit well with these movies. I haven't seen any of these movies yet, hard to say whether Vulg Trog would like them or not.
They were fun generally. None were outstanding but most delivered on a basic entertainment level, which was their aim.
Good topic. I'm weird as I think all the Lethal Weapon films are equally great. What makes me even weirder is that I have seen Terminator 3 countless times, but the first one only couple times.
Yes, you are weird for those choices. Its a catch-all video to moan about all of those series where you have to say, ignore the last few.
Haven't seen either and won't be in a hurry to see them but may check them out at some point. Fun video. Your video has been very well received.
Ghost watch is worth the time to see. It's very well made and far better than the gimmick it sounds like. Late night you can skip with nothing lost
Best not to mention Hellraiser. Sheesh. Good video on an all too sad phenomenon.
Mentioning Hellraiser would have started the waterworks. Best not to, for my dignity.
Interesting and I appreciate the synopsis!
What makes you think the aliens were genocidal? The humans attacked first.
I still haven't got on the Jess Franco bandwagon apart from the 2 Fu Manchu films ?!?!?! After your video , I think I'll stick to Jean Rollin haha.
After Battleship this film was a blessed relief. But yeah, I don't think you need to rush to watch his films.
It's Rihanna's finest work??? You can see why people don't want to hire Taylor Kitsch. Fun video sir. You poor devil.
Thanks. I am now a shell of a man.
As I said in my video, when I first saw orphans when it first came out I really didn’t like it. Watching it again when indicator released it, I found it to be brilliant, funny and moving. I can now identify with it more as I lost my mum in 2022. Excellent video sir and keep on chopping wood each day.
Thanks. Its a lovely film. I think the honesty about the craziness grief causes gives it extra bite.
Take a shot everytime he says Guatamala
One of those films that you can easily call a masterpiece. On the big screen the music crawls through the grass and through the smoke. Even with John Travolta's moustache , it's a triumph.
Malick is one of those great big screen directors. He understands atmosphere and its build so well.
Interesting take on the film! I enjoyed the book as well.
Thanks. Its a great film.
The book by Jim Jones or whoever.
How could it go wrong? Matthew Vaughn and Edgar Wright just aren't very good and are so overrated because they're decent but get over inflated as everyone else is so bang average. I will see it at some point and switch it off after 15mins probably. You're doing brave work sir.
Its a real horror show. I am not doing brave work. I am doing stupid work. This one was genuinely stupifying.
I shall watch some of them and some others I shall not. I can't say fairer than that. Fun video.
Thanks. Seems a fair assessment of the titles.
I couldn't understand a word you're trying to say....
Then you don't understand the beauty of the Scottish accent.
Great commentary, thanks!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Agree with you Peter. It's a great movie, but quite undefinable. The cinematography is so clinical and such a contrast to the gooyness of the plot... Love it.
i love this
Im with you in that i also like Dersu more than Rashomon. The latter is a good film, but this film really shows Kurasawa's heart in a way i dont see as much in some of his other, more popular films.
Yes, he's a director I like a lot of but not all. This film, which is very underseen, was a great surprise.
Maybe it’s action film fatigue but I thought it was just a good film. I didn’t think it was completely successful at what it was trying to do. Worth watching and I’ll be keeping it and rewatching it. I get that it was trying something new but for me it didn’t land properly. Not a huge fan of reborn either.
I liked this one a lot more than Reborn, which I thought lost direction. I am more of an action fan than you, which probably put me over the top with this one.
What’s this
Hi Peter. I’m also about to say a few words on this movie (as well as 9 other 2023 releases) and felt along similar lines to you. I got a lot of enjoyment out of it and loved the performances but it did feel overlong, especially in that final third. I know Stone has commented in interviews that she was a producer and so had control and willingness to do a lot of the sex scenes but nonetheless that side of things just felt a bit too repetitive after a while. But overall it deserves the praise and she is really great
Its an odd one as a film. Its very good but just has a few areas that don't quite come together, which is frustrating.
Amazing film. Perfect action film and so much better than what we get at the moment. The stick it gives the Rurouni Kenshin films made me chuckle. Great review big man!
Thanks. But we'll all enjoy those films too.
Wasn’t that impressed with this film when I saw it but I haven’t seen it since it came out. Near dark and strange days are my favourite bigelow films. More badass Bassett please.
I liked it a lot more on rewatch. First viewing I thought it was fine but it really grew on me during this new viewing. It now feels more about war than Iraq war.
Fun video. Sadly I think San Andreas is the only one I have seen all the way through haha. This and skyscraper are so stupid but watchable. What I remember about Dante’s peak was that it was terribly dull.
Skyscaper was the one that almost destroyed me. No way I was rewatching that for a video. Battlefield earth yes but not that. Dante's peak is just so dull and bored by its own scenes and story.
Fun video. I’ll see it eventually in five years but not any time soon. People need to stop, take a breath and actually prep these films properly instead of churning them out on a conveyor belt.
In the case of the Sony spiderman spin offs I would say don't stop, keep making them. Their shoddiness is hilariously entertaining.
One of my favorite movies of my childhood, a great classic, I still have to see the Robin hood of 2010 with Russell Crowe.... still didn't watch it, believe it or not.....
I quite liked the 2010 version. Its a bit long but better than the critics said at the time.
it would have been better if the whole film was from Rickman's point of view and followed his day to day life. Looks like this video will be a big hit too.
Rickman trying to seduce marion should have been the film.
Chiba being Chiba. That's enough for me. Even though I came a bit later to the Chiba party hosted by none other than CHiba. Being Chiba.
Yes. Chiba is great. He is quietly becoming my favourite of that era's Asian icons
It's a wonderful wee film. Has more heart than two minutes and I feel may have more repaeat viewing potential . Lovely film.
Yeah. Its a beautiful film. Made the video basically to advertise to others how good it is.
Nothing to say apart from they're wonderful. Meaning of Life is always third and I flip-flop between the Holy grail and Brian as my favourite. So many memorable, daft, smart and rude ideas. Fun video sir.
Thanks. It was good to watch them all again and appreciate the skill involved. the good thing is that they kept changing it up. No film was the same as they seemed to enjoy challenging themselves. Therefore even flaws are part of the charm.
Glad to see you back with some more videos, Peter. Ferrari sounds interesting. I am so far behind on current films. I hope to rectify that in the next few months.
Thanks for watching the video. I hope you are doing okay.
i'll be picking this one up for watching on the big screen . Sounds good. Thanks for the review.
It's one of those so much better than it needs to be films.
Wonderful review of a wonderful film. It completely blew me away. The decisions about how things were achieved are over the characters pay grade, so personally I don't mind the details not being there. An epic for people who think they've seen all the epics. Seven hours well spent. A 4k is still illegal.
The 4k is probably gonna be here eventually. Patience is needed. The bluray is very nice.
I watched this movie because I really like Billy Friedken and Michael Biehn. It looked unpolished and cheap by Friedken's standards but though the court room drama stuff was well done.
Its a low budget film which hasn't had a remaster since the SD days. Hopefully the new 4k shall help. I liked its lack of budget. It gave it a rough feel that added to the horror.
Siapakah nama artis yg menjadi bintang di serial ini?
El Fantasma... 👌🏼 La Llorona (of THAT year [there is a version of 1969 with Mauricio Garcés]) ... 🤔 ... 👎🏼
I’ll be watching this one at some point. Good old Donnie Yen. Good stuff sir.
